The island

Four miles long, one mile wide, almost entirely wild

North Captiva can't be reached by car — only by boat, ferry, or small plane — and three-quarters of it is protected as a nature reserve. What's left is a run of quiet white-sand beach, sandy golf-cart roads, and a house built to make the most of both.

The home was recently remodeled top to bottom, and it's arranged over four levels that each do something different — from a top-floor lookout with wraparound Gulf views down to a poolside bar built for the whole group. We've laid it out below the way you'd actually move through it.

From the rooftop lookout down to the pool deck, each floor has its own reason to linger.

TOP LEVEL

Observation room

Windows on three sides frame the Gulf and the island's famous sunsets. A queen Tempur-Pedic sofa-bed here is what lets the house comfortably sleep 8. This level also opens onto a private open-air deck with a nearly 360-degree bird's-eye view of the island and spectacular sunsets.

MAIN LEVEL

Living, kitchen & screened balcony

An open living area with a big flat-screen and a deep, comfortable couch, a fully equipped kitchen, and a treetop-level screened balcony that stretches the living space outdoors. Full bath on this floor too.

BEDROOM LEVEL

Master suite & two more bedrooms

A king master with en-suite bath, a twin room ("Surf Shack"), and the queen "Mermaid" room share this floor, along with a third full bath and the washer/dryer. Master and Mermaid each have their own TV.

GROUND LEVEL

Pool & Margaritaville-style bar

A large heated pool, a round bed for poolside lounging, and a full bar with seating, ring toss, and darts. A bar-side table with extra seating, a pool deck table with umbrella, chaise lounge chairs, and a 2-person hammock provide ample choices for lounging and spending time with family and friends. A private outdoor shower and half bath keep wet feet out of the house.

Getting there

Three ways in — none of them a car

Part of the island's charm is what it keeps out. Here's how guests actually arrive.

By ferry

A short, scenic ride over from the mainland, with good odds of spotting dolphins and birds along the way. Two ferry companies serve the island.

By private boat

Bring your boat and we'll help arrange a dock slip — handy if you're planning to fish the flats while you're here.

By small plane

Fly into the island's airstrip and walk straight to the house — landing and tie-down privileges are included.

Bring your poles

Fish right off the beach, or take your own boat or a charter out for some of the region's best inshore and offshore fishing — snook, redfish, tarpon, snapper, and more.

Set on the Gulf side of the island, close enough to the sand that the walk barely counts. A short boat ride south, the neighboring Captiva Island has a wider run of restaurants worth the trip.
